I'm a mystery and thriller reader--have been since childhood. I grew up in the pre-television period. I started with the Bobsey Twins, then the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, then Earl Stanley Gardner and Perry Mason, then Agatha Christie with Hercule Peroit and Jane Marple, then P.D. James, then John D. MacDonald and Travis McGee and on up to the present day. I've left out a lot of my favorite authors but you get the point---I can claim to be a bit knowledgeable about crime fiction. In my view, todays best crime and thriller writers are Michael Connelly whose main character is Harry Bosch and Lee Child whose main character is Jack Reacher. The 12th Lee Child book, Nothing to Lose, came out on Tuesday. I finished it today. It was excellent, as always. And it was unique. All the authors I've mentioned, including Lee Child have always avoided any mention of politics. For the above authors politics is verboten. Jack Reacher is an ex-army MP. The other books have all be generically politically neutral. It's just a paragraph, but Jack Reacher comes out against the Iraq war. I nearly fell off the sofa. That took guts--that was ballsy. I credit Lee Child with a lot of courage--and I think he's right. I recommend you read the Lee Child books with Jack Reacher. Read them in order. The first in the series is titled "Killing Floor". Jim
