Strassel: The GOP After Specter - WSJ.com
States elect their Senators in general elections, parties select their candidates in party primaries. This is a pretty darn good system. One would expect that the party would pick its best and brightest to run in the Primary. WRONG!!! The party picks the candidate most likely to be able to self finance. Thoughts of accomplishment, integrity, competence go out the door. You simply can't make a dog turd attractive to voters. That's just one of the reasons the GOP is in the shape it's in. Jim
